WHITTIER- The Coast Guard says a fish tender has run aground and spilled diesel fuel into Prince William Sound.

The crew of the Homer-based Naknek Spirit was able to transfer about 1,500 gallons of fuel into another tank before it could leak into the sound. The ruptured tan held about 2,000 gallons of fuel.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer 1st Class Shawn Eggert says no injuries were reported and the ship was able to refloat at high tide and limp to Whittier under its own power.

The spill was contained in boom and Eggert says a response vessel is working to clean it up.

The grounding happened in Passage Canal, six miles east of Whittier in sensitive habitat for Steller sea lions.
