ANCHORAGE- Police searched an Anchorage neighborhood for hours Wednesday after a man fired several shots at a city police officer. The officer was not hit.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro says the man fled on foot.

The manhunt that followed involved dozens of uniformed officers and SWAT members as well as police dogs and a helicopter. Traffic was temporarily restricted in the neighborhood and nearby schools were put on alert.

The effort failed to turn up the suspect and by evening the major search was over. Castro says investigators are checking leads.

The officer was conducting routine business on East Dowling Road shortly after noon when Castro says he spotted a suspicious looking man in a parking lot.

The officer got out of his cruiser and approached the man. Castro says the suspect started walking away, then turned and fired multiple shots before fleeing.
