ANCHORAGE- The city of Anchorage has taken over a low-income motel in downtown Anchorage.

Officials say the owner of the Big Timber Motel and the Show Club strip club on 5th Avenue failed to pay more than $30,000 in property taxes.

Municipal officials inspected the buildings and the units and found multiple safety violations, including bed bugs and mice.

Currently there are 23 people living in the motel.

"We found bed bugs in every single room. We want to keep everyone safe and healthy," says Mayor Press Secretary Lindsey Whitt.

City officials are also concerned with residents using electric heaters to stay warm, which could pose a fire hazard.

Right now, no one is being asked to move, and depending on what happens to the property, the city says they will work with tenants to find a safer housing situation.
