Police are asking the public for help in finding a sexual assault suspect.

At about 1 a.m Tuesday police responded to a sexual assault on Government Hill.

A 23-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk towards the A-C Couplet bridge when a man on a bicycle pulled her into a wooded area where he sexually assaulted her. The victim managed to get away and flagged down a passing motorist for help.

Police officers and canine units searched the area but could not find the suspect. Police are looking for anyone who may have seen the man around that time of night. He is described as an Alaskan native in his late 20's with short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. And was riding a green mountain bike..

Police say they've seen more sexual assault cases than usual so far this year.

"We've been very busy with sexual assaults," said Detective Sargeant Ken McCoy. "Our numbers are actually higher than they've been in years past at this point so the numbers are steadily increasing."

If you have any information regarding the suspect please contact police at 786-8900.
