ANCHORAGE - Troopers say Israel Keyes committed suicide by cutting his wrist with a shaving razor and used bedding material from his cell to strangle himself.

The 34-year-old embedded the blade of the razor into a pencil to cut himself on the left wrist. The state medical examiner will determine whether it was blood loss, strangulation or both that caused his death.

Keyes was being held in isolation at the Anchorage Jail Complex for the murder and kidnapping of Samantha Koenig. He also admitted to killing at least 7 other people over the span of 11 years, including a couple in Vermont.

Officials found pages of crumpled, blood soaked paper that appeared to have writing on them and were recovered from his jail cell. Troopers turned over the paper to the FBI for laboratory processing.

Troopers say Keyes killed himself sometime after 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. His body was discovered just at 5:57 a.m. Sunday morning.
