JUNEAU- The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating what caused a 76-foot fishing vessel to sink and spill fuel into Portage Cove outside of Haines Harbor.

Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said that divers were able Saturday afternoon to close off areas of the vessel Neptune to prevent more fuel from letting loose.

He says the vessel had an estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel aboard but it's not known how much of that discharged.

Haines harbor master Phil Benner reports that the vessel is owned by Ocean Beauty Seafoods. He says no one was hurt. The company was not immediately available for comment.

Officials with the Coast Guard and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the spill.

Benner says the vessel owner has hired a contractor to clean up the oil.
