Wasilla, AK - Alaskans are rejoicing after a new sign appeared in Wasilla, announcing the arrival of Sonic.
Sonic is a popular franchise in the Lower 48 that specializes in old-fashioned drive in dining, most well known for their slushies and ice cream options along with all-American entrees. Now, they're opening their first ever Alaskan restaurant at Wasilla's newly developed Shoppes at Sun Mountain.
Franchise owner, Larry Clark, says when he started thinking about bringing a franchise north, he just felt like sonic was the right fit for Alaska. The reaction since the sign went up just about 24 hours ago is proof, he was right.
“It’s very refreshing. When you get into a venture like this, you put a lot of time, energy and money in it. You hope that it’s going to take off. Just the response we’re seeing after the sign went up is phenomenal. I think it was a good choice. I’m glad Sonic chose us, and I think Alaska is going to enjoy Sonic as much as a lot of us who already know the franchise,” Clark says.
He also says they're hoping to break ground in May with the franchise set to open in September.
Sonic won't be the only new entity opening either. Andrew Ingram, broker and part owner of the Shoppes at Sun Mountain, says they're continuing to expand and sign new contracts, all expected to start opening in the fall.
“The Sun Mountain project is going great. There’s tremendous interest. We have scheduled about 50,000 square feet and about 4 buildings to build. There’s a 25,000 square foot Planet Fitness we’re starting in the spring. Then we’re going to build two small multi-tenant retail buildings, Sonic, and possibly one other starting in the spring,” says Ingram. “We expect them all to be done by late 2019 or early 2020. We’re excited.”
