Sitka Program Encourages Reusable Bags
An effort is under way to reduce the number of disposable plastic bags used in Sitka.
SITKA- An effort is under way to reduce the number of disposable plastic bags used in Sitka.
Boxes of reusable bags have been placed at grocery stores in the southeast Alaska town.
Customers are invited to take their groceries home in reusable bags, wash them and return them when they're done.
The bag-sharing program is a joint effort of local grocery stores and the Sitka Global Warming Group. A leader of the group, Michelle Putz, collected more than 130 tote bags to get the project started. Grocery stores and other businesses donated some more.
The hope is to help people who forget their own canvas or nylon shopping bags and to introduce other shoppers to the concept of reusable bags.
