APD Changes Weapons Policy Involving Rammed Cars
Anchorage police will no longer shoot at a suspect if the only weapon that person is using is a vehicle.
ANCHORAGE - Anchorage police will no longer shoot at a suspect if the only weapon that person is using is a vehicle.
Police Chief Mark Mew announced the new policy during a news conference Tuesday. Officers are now being trained on alternate methods.
The department has had three separate incidents this year of officer-involved shootings. One suspect was killed.
Mew says the new policy was put into place after the department checked with other law enforcement agencies across the country to determine their practices in reducing officer-involved shootings, especially when suspects use vehicles as a weapon.
Those departments were Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Diego. A consultant also was used in helping draft a policy specifically for the Anchorage department.
