Anchorage Appeals Court's Decision on Petition
Anchorage is appealing a judge's decision to allow a referendum effort to go forward challenging a controversial new labor law.
ANCHORAGE- Anchorage is appealing a judge's decision to allow a referendum effort to go forward challenging a controversial new labor law.
The municipality announced Friday it would appeal a lower court's ruling to the Alaska Supreme Court.
The Assembly in March approved a labor law that prohibits union members from going on strike and eliminates binding arbitration.
Unions backed a petition to take the matter to a public vote. The city rejected the petition, saying it was too narrow and technical for voters to decide, but a judge overturned.
More than 22,000 signatures were turned in this for the petition, and the city clerk's office continues to verify signatures. If enough are certified, it would appear on a future ballot pending a supreme court decision.
