Anchorage Labor Law Vote Could be Delayed Years
Anchorage residents may not vote on a contentious labor law until 2015.
ANCHORAGE- Anchorage residents may not vote on a contentious labor law until 2015.
A proposal was introduced Tuesday that could push the referendum vote to an unspecified date, even for two years.
The Assembly in March approved a labor law that prohibits union members from going on strike and eliminates binding arbitration.
Unions backed a petition to take the matter to a public vote. The city rejected the petition, saying it was too narrow and technical for voters to decide, but a judge overturned. The city has appealed to the supreme court
More than 22,000 signatures were turned for the petition, and the city clerk's office continues to verify signatures. If enough are certified, it would appear on a future ballot.
