Denali Wolf Count Down
Lowest Number In 26 Years
Denali National Park biologists releasing numbers from this year's spring season wolf count. Scientists observing 49 wolves in and around the park in March, that's down slightly from last fall when 57 wolves were counted in the region.
This is the lowest count since the park started monitoring wolves in 1986. Nine wolf packs were observed in the area last fall, that number increasing to eleven this spring.
Wildlife conservation groups say a "no take buffer" needs to be reinstated on the east perimeter of the park to ensure the number of wolves does not decline further.
A buffer had been in place from 2000 to 2010 but their has been a decline in the wolf population in the park since 2007.
