ANCHORAGE- The Anchorage Fire Department says three families had to leave their homes after an eastside fire.

The department was called to a fire just after 3 a.m. Wednesday at a four-unit apartment building in the Mountain View neighborhood.

Firefighters say the fire began in a second-floor home and was pronounced under control after about a half hour.

Fire Department Capt. Richard Minkler reports that 10 people inside the building and their pets made it out safely. He says the building mostly was damaged by smoke and can be salvaged.

The Red Cross was assisting displaced families.
