Graduation qualifying exam to get second look
Enhanced earlier reading program also on the radar this session
With the legislative session gearing up, the Senate Education Sub-committee is already hard at work.
Kodiak Republican Gary Stevens intends to introduce Senate bill 111 which would eliminate the high school graduation qualifying exam.
Stevens contends the current tests are not achieving their original goal of ensuring Alaskan high school graduates are ready to go onto higher education or enter the workforce.
The committee is also looking another bill this session that would encourage early reading for kindergarten through 3rd grade.
