ANCHORAGE - Officials at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson say the base commissary mall was briefly cordoned off as military authorities investigated a suspicious suitcase found outside a nearby convenience store.

Base spokesman John Pennell says traffic to the store and the mall was blocked after the discovery of a suspicious package outside the convenience store was reported at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Pennell says the suitcase turned out to be empty, but adds responders had to take precautions before they knew that.

Pennell says the convenience store was evacuated, but the mall was not.

The area was cleared shortly after 1 p.m.
