Fatal Crashes Way Up Over 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  - The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed that a fatal crash at an Merrill Field occurred after the pilot was told to go around a runway where another plane remained after landing.

The  Saturday crash killed 31-year-old pilot Robert Lilly and his girlfriend, 27-year-old Jessi Nelsen.

A preliminary NTSB reports says the couple took off from Wasilla and flew for 26 minutes in sunny skies and light winds.

Controllers had cleared the airplane to land on Merrill Field's main east-west runway behind a Cessna 172.

The total of aviation fatalaties in Alaska  now stands at 29 for 2013.
