ANCHORAGE- Alaska transportation officials say portions of the Glenn Highway north of Palmer now have new speed limits.

The changes went into effect Monday in an area stretching between milepost 91 - about 10 miles northwest of the Matanuska Glacier - and the Glennallen area.

The speed limit in most of that stretch of highway is now 65 mph, an increase from 55 mph.

The speed limit slows to 50 mph in the Caribou Creek area at around milepost 105. In Glennallen, the speed limit is 40 mph, and 50 mph approaching the town.

Officials say signs have been posted to designate the changes.

According to officials, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities conducted a speed-limit evaluation that showed the highway was able to support the higher speed.
