Off-Duty APD Officer Who Detained Walmart Shooter Says He's A "Good Witness"
ANCHORAGE - An off-duty police officer who was shopping at a Midtown Walmart is credited for detaining shooting suspect Daniel Pirtle Saturday, after he opened fire on the store manager.
APD spokeswoman Anita Shell says the double amputee suspect was trying to leave the store in his motorized scooter when Sgt. Mike Couturier caught up with the armed man and placed him in handcuffs.
"What goes through your head when you approach someone that could be dangerous to you is to not let them see you coming," Sgt Couturier said.
Sgt. Couturier found the store manager Jason Mahi, 33, lying on the ground surrounded by employees.
"There are a lot of hero's in and around us," said Sgt. Couturier. "For that event I was not that person I was just a really good witness to make sure the suspect didn't get away."
A witness, in the right place at the right time.
