Portion of Coastal Trail Closes for Maintenance

ANCHORAGE - A portion of the highly used Tony Knowles Coastal Trail will be down for maintenance starting next week.

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan announced a portion of the trail near milepost 1 will close on Monday Oct. 31.

The need for repair on this portion of the trail located just north of Lyn Ary Park is part of the aftermath from September's storms.

Large rocks have protected much of the trail from suffering effects of erosion, however, this portion of the trail lacked that same natural protection.

"Across the bowl and in this particular area of the coastal trail experienced significant erosion from the saturated soils," said Mayor Sullivan. "It eroded to almost six inches of the trail."

Residents can expect the trail to be closed for about a week and are asked to read signs carefully and plan to take alternate routes.
