Federal Vessel that sank in Kodiak Refloated, Moved to Boat Yard

A 63-foot U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service vessel that sank while docked at a Kodiak harbor has been refloated and moved to a boat yard.

ANCHORAGE - A 63-foot U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service vessel that sank while docked at a Kodiak harbor has been refloated and moved to a boat yard.

Service spokesman Larry Bell says the research vessel Arlluk (AR'-luk) was refloated Friday night and towed to a boat yard Saturday.

The cause of the sinking is unknown and will be investigated.

But Bell says the $2.5 million boat may not be repaired because of the high expense.

The Arlluk is based in Kodiak and was used by two wildlife refuges on the Alaska Peninsula.

It was docked Thursday and found submerged at 3:30 a.m. Friday by the harbormaster.

No one was on board.

The Arlluk was carrying 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel. The Coast Guard estimates that no more than 10 gallons leaked.
