Charter Company Wants Regular Alaska Flights

Two airlines are in the midst of a territorial battle in southeast Alaska, with one competitor accusing the other of not paying federal taxes.

Gustavus-based charter Air Excursions has applied to the U.S.
Department of Transportation to carry people and mail on a regular
schedule between Juneau and southeast Alaska.

But Wings of Alaska currently serves the same area, and the Oregon-based company is accusing Air Excursions of already flying a predictable schedule, contrary to its permit, and says that means it should have paid a federal excise tax estimated at $630,000. Air
Excursions denies wrongdoing.

An inquiry by the federal government was closed, saying some records created the appearance that Air Excursions may have exceeded its charter authority, but it wasn't clear that meant the
carrier was offering five-day-a-week regular roundtrips.
