Bell to Seek Recount in Senate Race

Alaska Republican state Senate candidate Bob Bell is seeking a recount in his race against Anchorage Democratic Sen. Hollis French.

JUNEAU - Alaska Republican state Senate candidate Bob Bell is seeking a recount in his race against Anchorage Democratic Sen. Hollis French.

When the race was certified Friday, it showed French with a 51-vote advantage.

Bell says he owes it to his supporters to make sure the count is accurate.

French said Bell was well within his rights to request a recount, and he said he'd probably request one, too, if he were in Bell's position.

The race was one of the most expensive and contentious Alaska Senate races this year, with French among the incumbents targeted for defeat by Republicans who wanted to break up the Senate's bipartisan majority.

Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai said it will take a day to recount the race. The state will pay for the recount.
