JUNEAU- Juneau School District officials say new playground equipment at Gastineau Elementary School in Douglas is off limits after small metal wires were found in the rubber ground covering below the equipment.
The problem was discovered shortly after the equipment was open to students. Use of the equipment was halted for safety reasons.
School district chief of staff Kristen Bartlett says the affected areas have been fenced off.
Bartlett says the district is working with the equipment supplier and the city and borough to reopen the playground as soon as possible.
The vendor is providing super magnets and metal detectors to help sweep the area for any remaining metal.
