A decrepit former hospital in Ketchikan is one step closer to being demolished.

Ketchikan's City Council declared a public emergency after the roof of the building began sagging.

The Juneau-based company Carson Dorn Incorporated will prepare a bid for the city that includes asbestos abatement and demolition of the building.

Overall, the project is expected to cost less than $1 million and officials hope it will be completed before the beginning of the tourist season.

The building is privately-owned, but the city stepped in after orders to destroy it were ignored.
