JUNEAU- Municipal officials in Juneau say the owner of a prominent downtown building damaged by fire has told them he intends to rebuild.

Building codes official Charlie Ford reported that Gastineau Apartments owner James Barrett expects to resolve insurance issues next week, and a settlement could lead to rebuilding.

Fire damaged the south Franklin Street building Nov. 5 and the City and Borough of Juneau condemned the structure.

It also issued a notice and order requirement for Barrett to inform the city whether he would raze the structure or rebuild.

Rebuilding would require building permits and construction that meets current safety codes.
