Juneau Harbor is Seeing Major Changes
ANCHORAGE, AK - Juneau is seeing major changes for both cruise ships and fishing vessels in the coming years.
The Juneau Department of Docks and Harbors have a total of about $150 million in projects, with most funds already covered.
The Douglas Breakwater project will be complete in the next two weeks. The $6 million breakwater--paid mainly by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers--will vastly improve conditions for wildlife.
A cruise ship dock and shoreline improvements have seen $7.5 million in support from the legislature. The $62 million project will be paid mostly by bonds. Construction will start in the tourism off-season of 2013.
"All these projects that Docks and Harbors has in the coming year will certainly transform Juneau for the better; provides more opportunities for jobs, and I think it'll be a better place to live," said Juneau Port Director Carl Uchytil.
The Juneau Department of Docks and Harbors is also working on the Don Statter Harbor, Aurora Harbor and Auke Bay Loading Facility.
