JUNEAU- A Juneau middle school principal has been awarded a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.

The Alaska Department of Education says Molly Yerkes of Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School is one of 40 recipients of the prize as an outstanding secondary school educator in 2013.
A department announcement says Yerkes taught English in China before she was hired as principal.
The department says she encourages staff to use resources outside of the classroom.
She created a fitness program for teachers to boost morale during winter months.
The department says she visits every classroom each week and takes notes on a laptop to provide feedback to teachers and parents.
The awards are made by the Milken Family Foundation.
It was the only Milken award in Alaska this year.
