JUNEAU- Alaskans turned in more than a ton of old prescription medication during a recent statewide disposal event.

The state Department of Public Safety, in a release, says more than 2,700 pounds of old meds were turned in last month at 34 collection sites across Alaska.
The event was sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, which works with the Alaska State Troopers and other law enforcement agencies around the country to hold disposal events every six months.
The effort is aimed at getting rid of old drugs that could be misused or abused.
