Sitka Security Breach

by Angela Krenzien

The personal information of more than 500 patients of a Sitka chiropractor was leaked out on the internet.

Dr. Paul Beane works at the Sitka Wellness Center; one of his patients discovered the breach during a Google search on Saturday and called authorities. An investigating officer was then able to access a wealth of personal information on other Sitkans, including social security numbers, dates of birth, and addresses.

Dr. Beane says that he used an electronic system to store patient information for about nine months in 2008 before he switched back to paper records in early 2009. The information was kept in an easily accessible, unsecured file online. He does not believe the records were posted intentionally.

So far there have been no reports of suspicious activity that might be linked to the breach.
