Some Sitka residents went shopping last weekend in Seattle, looking for new teachers.

Reports say three administrators from the Sitka School District attended job fairs in Seattle.

Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary Principal Casey Demmert says there are 14 positions open in Sitka, and the district is starting to see turnover with some of its veteran staff members.

He says it's important to be able to bring in young teachers who can be mentored by the veterans before they retire.

The district attended one fair open to districts across the Pacific Northwest, and a second one intended only for Alaska districts. In all, 17 Alaska districts attempted to entice teachers north at that fair.
