Teen Dies in Dune Buggy Crash on Southeast Island

KETCHIKAN - A 17-year-old girl driving an all-terrain vehicle on Prince of Wales Island was killed in a crash.
   
Alaska State Troopers say Paulette James of Port Protection was operating the dune buggy-style vehicle Thursday afternoon.
   
The ATV rolled down a 25-foot embankment near Lab Bay. James was not wearing a helmet.
   
A second person in the vehicle, 58-year-old Kenneth Morfeld of Point Protection, was injured and flown by floatplane to Wrangell Medical Center for treatment.
   
Troopers say he is expected to recover.
   
Port Protection is on the northern tip of Prince of Wales Island 50 miles west of Juneau. The unincorporated community has a population of 42.
