US Forest Service Considering Cabin Closures
The U.S. Forest Services is considering closing some public use cabins due to a shrinking budget and low usage in remote locations.
JUNEAU- The U.S. Forest Services is considering closing some public use cabins due to a shrinking budget and low usage in remote locations.
12 of 152 cabins could shutter in summer 2014. Three of them could also be converted into three-sided shelters.
Some of the cabins were crushed by a tree, flooded, are harder to get to or rarely used. Square Lake near Yakutat was booked just 13 nights over the last six years.
And rules that disallow use of chainsaws in designated wilderness areas have driven away volunteers who previously maintained the cabins.
Forest Service officials said they plan to release an environmental assessment within the next month evaluating what to do with the 12 cabins.
