JUNEAU- A Juneau landmark has been salvaged thanks to volunteers and some timely repairs.
The log cabin lodge at the Shrine of St. Therese was targeted for demolition in September but repairs performed over the summer have given it new life.
An engineer's had report concluded fixing the lodge, built in 1933, would cost nearly $1 million.
Juneau resident and marine salvager John Gitkov has memories of the lodge dating back to his childhood. He says he would have been filled with regret if he hadn't tried to save the structure.
A summer of repairs, including the removal of 750 pounds of moss from the roof, has saved the building.
Gitkov says that the building was pressure washed with acid, repainted and given multiple coats of sealer.
