Anchorage, AK - Alaskans beware – there is a small possibility you could contract measles due to a cruise ship passenger.
A teenage tourist was unaware she had mumps when she climbed aboard the boat on August 6th. Within just hours of being on the boat, she was placed into medical isolation until she was escorted to a medical center in Ketchikan. Passengers would have only been exposed for about 3 hours.
Those who could have come in contact are more likely in one of the southeast ports and possible some of the lower southcentral.
However, Chief of the Alaska Section of Epidemiology, Joe McLaughlin, says he truly doesn’t feel like Alaskans are at a risk, and if so, a very low one. The best way to ensure you don’t catch measles is to be vaccinated.
