I am hoping one of the local news stations will cover this story. Woody on Hockey on the ADN site ran this earlier this week. Wisconsin River Falls in now the only undefeated team in the country, men or women, division I,II & III.
Wisconsin-River Falls in ranked No. 1 in the nation among women's Division III teams, and you may be wondering, 'OK, so?''
Here's the so: The Falcons have reached that lofty status with considerable help from a couple of Anchorage goaltenders.
Senior Cassi Campbell is 9-0-1 (her .950 winning percentage leads D-III), with a 1.48 goals-against average that ranks seventh nationally and a .929 save percentage that ranks 18th in the country. Her career numbers are pretty eye-popping: 47-15-7, 1.80, .931, nine shutouts.
Junior Melissa Deardorff is no slouch. She's 7-0-0 (not enough games to qualify for national stats) with a 1.80 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Career stats: 24-5-5, 1.50, .933, seven shutouts.
And they aren't the only goalies from Anchorage flourishing in D-III.
Emi Williams, playing for Oswego, is 11-8-2, with a 1.71 goals-against average that ranks 13th in the nation, a .941 that ranks ninth, and three shutouts.
But back to Campbell and Deardorff for a moment. With those women helping a No. 1 team, it means both the top two women's teams in the country -- River-Falls in D-III, Wisconsin in D-I -- have Alaskans contributing. The University of Wisconsin, 28-2-2, includes twins Alev and Derya Kelter of Eagle River.
