Alaska Distillery Creates Hemp Vodka

by Katelynn VanVekoven

A local Distillery in Wasilla, Alaska created the first ever Hemp Vodka in the United States.

A Wasilla based company made their first unique mark in the industry by creating a smoked salmon flavored vodka and now this.

"We have a mad scientist who kind of runs the joint here, and he seems to have brilliant ideas," says Bella Coley, the distillery chief operating officer.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Hemp seed it is usually associated with marijuana. Don't get too excited though, this seed has no 'punch' in the product.

The Local Distillery gets their seeds sterilized from Canada so there's no THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

"It goes through a lot of government processes in order to test it and to make sure it doesn't have THC, and there's no 'wink wink' on that one", Coley says.

The Alaska Distillery plans for this one to be a big hit in the industry.

"To complete in the alcohol industry these days, you have to be innovative and you have to bring in new products and you have to be imaginative. This product right here lends itself to all three things." says Toby Foster, the company's chief executive officer.

The Alaska Distillery is hosting a kickoff party on Friday at the Chair 5 restaurant in Girdwood, Alaska, and at a hemp seed event in Colorado.

The Distillery says that the hemp will only make the vodka a little sweeter but that's something we can all raise our glass too.

I just noticed something: there's more comments on this one article (with the word "hemp" in the headline) than there are on any two other articles I've clicked on. Alaskan priorities??
