Trooper Involved In Shooting Incident

On August 19, 2021, at approximately 5:20 AM, an Alaska State Trooper in Selawik responded to a reported burglary and theft involving a firearm at a Selawik residence.

When the Trooper arrived at the scene, the suspects were not immediately located. The Trooper continued efforts to locate the suspects and contacted two men. One of the men was armed with a shotgun. At approximately 5:40 AM , the Trooper perceived a threat and discharged their service pistol, fatally striking the armed man. The Trooper was not injured. The deceased man is identified as 26-year-old Selawik resident Douglas Brown, Jr. Brown Jr. had an active $10,000 warrant for Burglary 1 with a firearm, Theft 2, Theft 3, and Criminal Mischief issued August 7, 2021, a $5,000 warrant for Assault 3 and 4 issued August 17, and a no-bail warrant for a probation violation issued July 22. Brown’s remains will be sent to the Alaska State Medical Examiner in Anchorage. Investigators from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation have responded to Selawik to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Once their investigation is completed, it will be forwarded to the Alaska Department of Law’s Office of Special Prosecutions for review. The Alaska State Trooper has been placed on administrative leave for 72 hours, and the name of the Trooper that discharged their service weapon will be released in 72 hours in accordance with department policy.
