Alaskan Artist Featured at Downtown Anchorage Hotel

Turning now to the local artist painting memorable moments of Anchorage. Your Alaska Link’s La’shawn Donelson introduces us to Rhonda Scott and her work. It could make the perfect holiday gift for someone you love.

An Alaskan artist is displaying iconic images of downtown Anchorage and spreading a little holiday cheer. It is all festival bright as local Alaska artist Rhonda Scott showcased her collection at Captain Cook Hotel in downtown Anchorage. Rhonda started painting later in life.

“And winters can be attributed to learning how to paint. I started painting when I was 50 years old, so I always wanted to have a hobby. I just never knew what it was. So I started taking lessons at Blaine from Don Kolstad and it just kind of evolved from there.”

She enjoys painting images of downtown.

“My hometown is where I grew up, and I just like capturing the essence of those areas.”

And this year’s holiday painting is.

“Image is called Sleigh Bells Ring and it’s the carriage that’s downtown. It actually parks in front of the hotel. Captain Cook picks up its clients, and then they give a beautiful romantic carriage ride around the city of Anchorage.”

And Rhonda’s artwork brings fond memories.

“Favorites right now is her Fourth Avenue piece. It’s a historic building, obviously, that we no longer have. And just keeping that memory alive. My senior year prom was held at the theater, so it’s really special to me.”

“I love the Fourth Avenue Theater and it just recently got torn down and it’s a tragedy. So I just wanted to remember it, I guess.”

To get your hands on Rhonda’s artwork and gets a free Christmas prints, she’ll be at Captain Cook tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
