APD Responds to Suspicious Vehicle

At 11:41 PM on October 8, a citizen called Anchorage Police Department dispatch to report a suspicious vehicle. The caller stated two people were inside a sedan and both appeared to be asleep.

Officers responded to a parking lot on the 700-block of East 34th Avenue. They located a Buick Century backed into a parking space up against a median.

The first officer to arrive blocked in the Buick with his patrol vehicle. The person who had called in the complaint approached the officer. As they were speaking, the Buick’s back-seat passenger, 21-year-old Alexander Carlton, opened the Buick’s door. The officer ordered Carlton to stay in the car; Carlton abruptly stood up and ran.

Backup officers just arriving on scene gave chase on foot while giving Carlton multiple commands to stop. Carlton ran into a nearby parking lot where he tripped and fell. He was taken into custody without further incident.

A computer check revealed that Carlton had an outstanding felony warrant for escape. Carlton was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on that warrant, and he was additionally charged with Obstructing an Investigation by Fleeing.

The driver of the Buick was released without being charged.
