Kotlik Resident Arrested for Fatally Shooting Man

On April 15 around 8:00 a.m. , Alaska State Troopers were notified that a man had been shot inside a home in Kotlik and was deceased. Due to poor weather in the area, Troopers from Bethel were unable to travel to Kotlik until the 16.

Based on the investigation, 49-year-old Kotlik resident Yago Pitka was inside the home of another Kotlik resident when Pitka was asked to leave; however, he refused to leave the home. Pitka then physically attacked the resident inside his home, and a physical altercation occurred between the two individuals. The resident then produced a firearm and fired at Pitka, striking him fatally. Pitka was declared deceased at the scene.

On October 12, around 1:50 PM, Alaska State Troopers stationed in Bethel arrested 54 year old Ralph Waska of Kotlik, Alaska for one count of Manslaughter, and two counts of Murder in the second degree in Bethel. Waska was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant and transported to the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center where he is being held on $250,000 bail pending his arraignment today
