Possible School Cuts, ASD

We begin tonight in Anchorage, with talks of possible cuts and closures in the city’s school district. The district is currently facing a huge budget deficit — to the tune of $68 million.

At a school board meeting last night, proposals to save money included cutting the gifted program “ignite.” Another idea being tossed around is combining middle schools, and having students switch at 6th grade rather than 7th. We reached out to the district, a spokesperson said it is currently in the research phase and not recommending any cuts at this time.
