Travel Tuesday | Cozumel, Mexico

For this week’s Travel Travel we’re going to Cozumel, Mexico..

Located 12 miles east of mainland Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel describes itself as having a “Mexican heart with a Caribbean soul”. Measuring 28 miles long and 11 miles wide, Cozumel’s clear turquoise waters and powdery sands coax travelers from all over the world.

There’s a few ways you can get to this majestic Yucatán island. Most people fly either directly into Cozumel airport. Or they fly into Cancun, drive 1 hour to Playa del Carmen, and then take a 45 minute ferry ride to Cozumel.

Additionally many experience this legendary Mexican destination by boat. Each year, 3.5 million people visit the Mexican island of Cozumel via cruise ships.

Visitors are welcomed everywhere— In fact, safety is one of Cozumel’s selling points, as is the healthy lifestyle. Chain restaurants and shops are nearly non-existent, and family businesses thrive. Granted, the waterfront has been taken over by jewelry and souvenir shops catering to the thousands of cruise ship passengers descending on the town almost daily. But wander a few streets inland and you’re in the heart of a genuine Mexican community. Staying in the main town of San Miguel is fun and convenient, putting you in the center of everyday life. It’s possible to travel on a small budget here, and easy to vacation comfortably without spending a fortune. If you’re looking for a luxurious splurge, you’ll find that as well, though minus any pretensions.

Cozumel has all the luxury resorts and lively nightlife one would expect of a Caribbean island, along with the excellent food and endless Margaritas that come with travel in Mexico.

Scuba diving in Cozumel is the finest in the Western Hemisphere, with a tremendous diversity of reefs, caves, and canyons teeming with tropical fish and coral. Whether you are a beginner diver, or an expert seeking new underwater frontiers, don’t leave Cozumel without submersing yourself below the surface.

That’s all for now, I’m Katelyn O’Shaughnessy, join me next week for another Travel Tuesday.
